I’ve been fortunate in my career and life. I’ve been married to my wife for 50 years. She’s my best friend and closely trusted companion.
I’ve had jobs that have taken me all over the world and I’ve been influenced by many industry leaders.
My vocation as a groundwater consultant has been built over the past 60 years by paying attention when experienced, smart people shared their knowledge with me.
When it was time to build our home, I was able to construct my own well that has provided great water quality for our house for over 25 years. My well was constructed above and beyond the minimum standards of the day for private water wells. To me this how all wells should be drilled…to the best possible standards.
Now I’m telling you this for a reason. Just because the approved standards are acceptable for the minimum protection for groundwater, they were not acceptable to me. This was my well that my family was going to use and I was constructing it to the BEST possible standards for groundwater protection. Over 25 years since I drilled that well my water quality and volume haven’t changed or waved. The untreated water straight from the well is good hard drinking water according to my friends who visit from the city. We added a water softener to help with the laundry and fixtures.
So, after all these years I’m having a hard time trying to understand the reluctance of regulatory agencies and local water quality officials from embracing the benefits of a fully protected water well no matter what it is used for. The usage is not the important part, it’s where the source of the water comes from, that is so important. And when a well is abandoned, it needs to be properly grouted if it is repurposed. The same goes before it is to be sealed. Only then will the co-mingling and blending of differing water qualities be stopped and the groundwater we need will be protected.
We can make this happen; we just need to have desire to make it happen.
I JUST DON’T UNDERSTAND WHY THIS IS SO HARD.
